DEPTH in the Landscape -what is it?

Depth is when you sequentially position visual points of interest further from the viewer. Some are close, some are far, and some are in between.

What emotional response does it create?

Depth adds interest and immersion to a landscape design, creating the illusion of larger spaces just beyond your immediate environment. It coddles you with concentric rings of assorted visual elements. It makes you feel safe.

How can you create it?

To create depth, you must first understand and identify the vantage point from where the viewer will most often experience the landscape. After that, you must deliberately design additional elements that will be planted further and further away from the viewer, becoming visible in decreasing clarity and thereby creating depth of field...
